Business Savvy Gift Giving

The giving of gifts has been a long-held tradition in every culture. Why is it so universally accepted and widely practiced? Because of it's inherent nature. Gift giving brings about a wealth of benefit for both the giver and receiver by confirming a personal connection and enhancing the relationship. Taking this concept a step further, there are tremendous benefits for gifts in the business world. Gifts are an excellent way to build and maintain business relations.

A business gift is a reflection of both you and your company. Keep in mind that the gift you choose says a lot about your social skills, the corporate culture, the business relationship and your company image. The gift packaging or presentation may be almost as important as the gift itself! It is wise to cross-examine your gift to be sure the message you are sending is appropriate for your relationship and the current business dealings. The last think you want is for your gift to look like a bribe!

There are 4 groups of people in the business world that may be potential gift candidates for you, depending on your position.

• Customers and Clients - this includes current and prospective
• Employees - of course everyone in the office, but don't forget about the outside sales force, resellers and consultants
• Vendors and Suppliers - people who keep your business going
• Outside business contacts - think of all your business networking throughout the year, and who are the key people that should be recognized?

While the holiday season is the most popular time for corporate gift giving, there are other opportunities to show your appreciation. They will make you and your company stand out and make an impression. Don't let an opportune moment slip by, as timing is everything!

• Show your appreciation for help or hard work
• Give thanks for a referral
• Promote a new product or service
• As an apology
• Celebrate completion of a project
• Honor a significant event (new partnership, new office, merger, promotion or anniversary)
• Acknowledge a birthday, wedding or new baby
• Enhance your company image

It is important to note that some companies have guidelines regarding the giving and accepting of gifts. You may need to watch the dollar amount you spend, or possibly not be given at all. Simply call the Human Resource department to inquire about any potential problems. If you run into a situation where no gifts are allowed, it may be an acceptable alternative to make a donation to charity in their name.

Gifts are powerful tools in business when used properly. By keeping a few guidelines in mind, you are able to take advantage of the gift giving opportunities when presented and to reap the benefits of a beneficial business relationship.
