The Right Essential Oil is Essential - How to Choose

How much do you know about essential oils? Would you consider using Ylang-Ylang or Sandalwood in a relaxing mixture?

Essential oils are measured by a number of different factors. Their properties should only be a general rule for you to follow; many people will have their own feelings and reactions to some of the oils due to their personal likes/dislikes and any good/bad memory associations from their past. It is beneficial to consider the general information given to you, but be sure to pay attention to your own reaction as well.

Here are some of the most popular, widely-used essential oils and their properties:

1. Lavender - Can be best described as balancing, calming and soothing. It is beneficial during massage to relieve muscle tension; for skin care to nourish dry skin and a treatment for acne; and has a positive affect on many other ailments and conditions. One of the most versatile essential oils, it blends well with almost all of the others. The aroma is described as fresh, green herbaceous, floral aroma with pleasant balsamic undertones.

2. Jasmine - Considered the "Queen of the Night", it is especially beneficial for skin imbalances resulting from emotional disturbances. It has a strong influence on our emotions, can promote self-confidence, optimism and sensuality. Because of this aspect, it is popular in perfumes. The aroma is described as intensely floral, and a warm aroma with herbaceous-fruity undertones.

3. Ylang-Ylang - In the Malayan language it means "Flower of the Flowers" due to its incredibly sweet fragrance which is relaxing and soporific. It is useful in reducing pain and to help reconcile feelings of anger and frustration. In skin care, it is particularly useful for oily skin. The aroma is described as intensely sweet, floral aroma with balsamic and exotic-woody undertones.

4. Geranium - Like Lavender, this is a classic balancing oil that can be uplifting for depression and fear. It can even be used to repel insects when used in an aroma lamp (but it smells good)! The aroma is described as strong, leafy and rosy aroma with minty and fruity undertones.

5. Rosemary - One of the longest known oils, it's use has been found in back in Egypt and during the Greek and Roman times. It's fragrance is stimulating, strong and clear. Aids in mental capacity and clarity against strong emotions and mood swings. It's aroma is described as strong herbaceous, camphoraceous aroma that is both penetration and warm; with a subtle minty and woody undertone.

6. Patchouli - Because of its use in older times as a moth repellent, it often reminds people of musty clothes. But even with this history, it has gained much popularity recently because of its unique and pleasant aroma. It is calming, relaxing and acts as an aphrodisiac. It's aroma is described as persistent, musty-sweet aroma with some woody and earthy undertones.

7. Lemongrass - As the name suggests, it is a powerful tonic that is refreshing and stimulating. Useful when fresh thinking and good concentration are required. Wonderful in a foot bath to revive tired feet. It's aroma can be described as strong, grassy-lemon, herbaceous aroma with an earthy undertone.

8. Vanilla - A well-known smell as one of its forms is an extract in many foods. It is calming and relaxing, and will soften anger and frustration. Adds a sweet, complex note to a blend. It's aroma is described as rich, sweet and balsamic.

9. Eucalyptus - Reminiscent of medicine and illness because many medicinal preparations contain this oil. It's healing power is broad and wide-ranging. Considered refreshing and stimulating, it also increases concentration and intellectual capacities. It's aroma is described as powerful and somewhat camphoraceous.

10. Sandalwood - A popular fragrance when practicing yoga, it has many applications including achieving union with the body's energy centers. It is relaxing and calming, providing warmth and balance. It's aroma is described as soft, sweet, woody and balsamic.
